Largest-ever hole in ozone layer over the Arctic closes

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

We previously read about the largest-ever hole in the ozone layer above the Arctic circle in the Northern Hemisphere.

The ozone layer is a natural layer of gas in the stratosphere (second layer of Earth’s atmosphere). It protects us from the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

Now, scientists have reported that the hole has closed. They have been tracking it at Copernicus’ Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).

  • However, this hole was not created by human activity but by a polar vortex.
  • A polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds both of Earth’s poles. They always exist but are stronger in winter and weaker in summer.
  • Thus, it’s recovery is most likely not linked to air quality or the reduction in pollution due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This now-closed hole was much larger than usually seen above the Arctic.

On the other hand, the hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctic circle in the Southern Hemisphere is caused by human activity. It is due to ozone-depleting chemicals released from factories.

Thankfully, even the Antarctic hole is getting smaller with a reduction in pollution.
