Happy Onam!

Onam is a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in Kerala. It is also celebrated by Malayalis all over India and the world.

Onam marks the beginning of the Malayalam year, called Kolla Varsham. The festival falls in the months of August/September every year and lasts for 10 days. This year, the festival started on 12 August and today is the last day, Thiruvonam, which marks the end of the Onam celebrations.

Why do people celebrate this festival?

Onam festival is celebrated to honour the kind-hearted King Mahabali. He is believed to return to Kerala during this festival. According to legend, Mahabali was a powerful and wise demon (asura) king who ruled Kerala.

How do people celebrate Onam?

Onam is usually celebrated with a lot of festivities. People make rangoli, flower carpets, offer prayers, wear traditional clothes, have boat races, tiger dances and many more. It is also celebrated with special food and feasts, popularly knows as Onam sadhya. However, this year, as well, due to COVID-19, celebrations are restricted.
