New exoplanets discovered by using Artificial Intelligence
Recommended for AI
New exoplanets have been discovered recently. Let’s find out how.
Earlier, we read that AI or Artificial Intelligence can help find new planets and asteroid.
Astronomers and computer scientists from the University of Warwick, UK have built a machine learning (ML) algorithm. This was used to identify 50 new exoplanets (planets outside the solar system) from old data.
Machine learning is an application of AI that provides systems with the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience.
The research team first trained the algorithm to accurately differentiate real planets from false positives. Then, it was used to analyze old NASA data sets which is where it found the 50 exoplanets.
These 50 new exoplanets are of different sizes. Some planets are as large as Neptune while others are smaller than Earth. Some of their orbits are as long as 200 days, and some as short as a single day.
Now, the researchers hope to use the AI for current and future telescope missions such as NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The AI can go through a large amount of data very fast and also perform on its own. It can also be used to confirm new discoveries.
