The word ‘peace’ entered the English language way back in the 12th century. It originally meant getting a break from all the drama in public life!

Like a lot of English words, it has foreign roots: ‘Peace’ comes from the French ‘pais’, which itself comes from the Latin ‘pax’. In Latin, it could mean ‘peace’ but also things like a deal or agreement.

Did you know…? Around 1300 CE, people started using ‘peace’ in greetings (that’s super old-school!). It’s even sometimes used as a farewell, like in the phrase ‘rest in peace’.

Get this: In lots of languages, their word for peace doubles as a hello or goodbye. Think of the Hawaiian ‘aloha’ or the Arabic ‘salaam’ – how cool is that?
