Tasmanian devils reintroduced to the mainland Australia after 3000 yearsThe Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous (meat-eating) marsupial (the same family as koalas and kangaroos). It can be now only found in the wild (forests) on the island state of Tasmania. Tasmania is part of the country of Australia. And there are 25,000 wild devils left in Tasmania.

Tasmanian devils died out on the mainland of Australia after the arrival of dingoes (wild dogs). A certain type of cancer also killed around 90% of their population.

An organisation called Aussie Ark released 11 devils into a wildlife sanctuary in New South Wales. Prior to that, a trial was done with 15 of these animals. This means 26 Tasmanian devils now live in mainland Australia.

Authorities hope that this will lead to the return of its population back to the mainland. They will use radio collars, camera traps and regular surveys to keep a check on the animals.
