Theresa May set to step down as UK Prime Minister

The UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, will step down as the PM and Conservative Party leader on 7th June 2019.

Addressing the nation outside 10, Downing Street (official residence of PM of UK), Mrs. May expressed hope that the new leader will have more luck negotiating a deal for the UK to leave the European Union.
 	She has been facing a lot of criticism over failing to deliver her flagship policy of leaving the European Union, having missed 2 Brexit deadlines.
 	Her resignation has triggered a leadership contest. Whoever wins as the Conservative Party's next leader will be the prime minister too.

Former London mayor Boris Johnson is currently considered the front runner for the post.

Background to Brexit - UK's exit from the European Union

In 2016, after years of deliberation, the then Prime Minister, David Cameron called for a vote - whether the UK should leave the European Union or not.

A narrow majority of the British public chose to exit the European Union.

David Cameron resigned from prime minister-ship as he firmly believed that leaving the EU would be an act of 'economic self-harm'. 
 	Theresa May was elected as the new Party leader to head this endeavour.
 	The UK parliament has not been in favour of Brexit, and definitely not without a good deal.

Theresa May is the second female prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher. Her tenure lasting 3 years was overshadowed by the Brexit negotiations.
