Animals in space? Yes, baby squids and water bears on a space trip
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Have you heard of animals in space? We read about water bears or tardigrades the other day . These tiny microscopic animals are known for being super tough. Some have even gone to space. In fact, do you remember reading in the children’s news about how tardigrades may be still alive in space?
A lot more tardigrades are about to be sent to space again. This time, they will be joined by baby squids!
NASA is preparing to launch around 128 baby squids and 5,000 tardigrades to the International Space Station (ISS) on 3 June 2021.
They will be sent on a SpaceX rocket, along with other things that astronauts on the ISS need.
Why do we send animals in space?
The tardigrades are being sent so that scientists can study what tricks they use to survive in space. These tough creatures can survive anything. So, scientists want to see if we humans can learn lessons from them.
As for the baby squids, they glow in the dark. These squids (called bobtail squid) have a special light-producing organ inside their bodies. The glow comes from bacteria that live in the organ. So, scientists want to know how spaceflight will affect the squids and their bacteria.
Let’s wish them a safe journey!
