Admiral Karambir Singh is India’s new Navy Chief

Admiral Karambir Singh is India’s new Navy ChiefOn 31st May 2019, Admiral (Adm.) Karambir Singh took charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS).

He took over from Admiral Sunil Lanba, who retired.
 	Adm. Singh was the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of the Eastern Naval Command, headquartered in Visakhapatnam.

During his long service of nearly 39 years, Adm. Singh has served in many Command, Staff and Instructional appointments.

However, his appointment has been challenged in a petition filed by a senior officer.

Vice Adm. Bimal Verma has filed a petition with the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT), saying that, by seniority*, he should be the one promoted.
 	The AFT has set 17 July 2019, as the next date of hearing for this petition and meanwhile, allowed Adm. Singh to assume charge.

The heads of the Army and the Air Force will also be changed later this year, as they both are set to retire.

The tenure of a Service Chief is three years or 62 years of age, whichever is earlier.

*Seniority: Position earned by reason of longer service or higher rank.
