Curdi underwater village in Goa!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Curdi is a village in the state of Goa. Every year, during the peak of summer in April and May, parts of the submerged village rise above the water for about a month.

Why is the village usually underwater?

During the 1970s the Goa government decided to build a dam on the river Salaulim in order to provide sufficient water for drinking and irrigation purposes.

  • So, nearly 20 villages went underwater inside the dam and Curdi was one of them.
  • All the villagers and their belongings were shifted to safe places nearby.

The native people of Curdi visit their lost homeland during this time.

Here are some interesting facts about Curdi:

  • It was located on the banks of the river Salaulim, between two hills.
  • There were around 3,000 people in the village.
