An ATM on the Dal Lake

What is an ATM (automated teller machine)?

An ATM is a banking machine. It is usually kept outside in a public space and from this, you can take money out of your bank account using a debit or credit card.

The State Bank of India (SBI) has recently opened an ATM on a houseboat on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. SBI chairman Dinesh Khara inaugurated (declared it open) on 16 August.

SBI hopes that it will make life more convenient for people in the area as well as tourists. It will also add to the charm of Srinagar.

Dal Lake

This is a famous lake in Kashmir. It is also known as the “Lake of Flowers”, “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir” or “Srinagar’s Jewel”. Many people live on this lake in houseboats. The lake is also famous for its shikaras, or small boats which are a cultural symbol of Kashmir. They are used to carry passengers and also for selling vegetables and fruits. Moreover, Dal Lake even has a floating post office.
