Argentina and Uruguay experience a severe power failure

Argentina and Uruguay experience a severe power failureElectricity has finally been restored to more than 90% of Argentina and Uruguay after a severe electrical failure* left tens of millions of people in the dark.

The power cut* occurred shortly after 7:00 AM (3:30 PM IST) on 16th June.
 	It was linked to an unexplained failure in the transmission of electricity from the Yacycretá hydroelectric dam.
 	The electrical failure delayed voting for the local elections in Argentina that were supposed to start on Sunday.
 	Parts of Paraguay and Chile were also affected.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri has promised a full investigation.

How have people been affected?

Among the affected provinces in Argentina were Santa Fe, San Luis, Formosa, La Rioja, Chubut, Cordoba and Mendoza.
 	In neighbouring Paraguay, parts of Ayolas, Pilar, Villalbín, Misiones and Ñeembucú were also without power.
 	Residents were warned to conserve water, as the supply of drinking water had been affected by the failure.
 	Images on social media showed dark towns and cities and long lines of cars at petrol stations.
 	Voters were seen voting for the elections in the dark, with mobile phones being used for light.

*Power failure/electric failure/power cut: When there is no electricity due to a problem in the supply.
