Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.

So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Ms. Susan Rubin Varghese. She is the Principal of The Indian Academy, Dubai. The school follows an integrated, interdisciplinary and theme-based curriculum to help children see the connections and correlate thereby enabling retention.

Here is a short, edited excerpt of the one-on-one conversation of Ms. Susan Rubin Varghese with Deepti Beri, Director at Curious Times. Also, watch the full video of the conversation at the end of this excerpt.

When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? When I was in university, getting into education was not in my dreams at all. But during my Masters, I felt I would be good at it. I started as a lecturer in Mumbai at a university and since then, I got into education. Connecting with young minds and envisioning that they would see a better world. That’s what motivates me. It’s been wonderful to see so much cultural diversity here in my school in Dubai and I enjoy seeing them grow intellectually and emotionally.

About the school It’s a co-educational school, CBSE-affiliated focused on skill-based learning. We are an inclusive school and believe that every child is special and we try to ensure that every child grows as the best version of themselves.

Role of teachers in the changing world where technology plays an important role. In my school, technology was a part of our school culture. Of course, the pandemic really pushed its use a lot more. Technology makes learning easier. It also helps to make learning better for students, especially those who may struggle in a conventional classroom. But children need to learn what to look at and what not to. Teachers have an important role as guides for them. Teachers and students are all learners in the game. Hybrid learning is here to stay.

Thoughts on NEP. We consider this as a new opportunity. We as a team are always wanting to experiment. We have integrated new ideas from the NEP skill-based programmes into our school. NEP is a blessing and prepares children for vocational skills, not just academic one.

Best practices. Being in Dubai, a developing city, the standards are very high. We are always preparing children to be global citizens and everything is child-centric. Skill acquisition and real-world application are very important. So, I’m happy that CBSE is moving towards that as well.

Share your message for your and Curious Times students. There is no limit to anything you can do. Children have a major role to play, to be ambassadors and solve the world’s problems in the future, like the environment, world peace and more. So, go for it and you can do it!
