South Korea’s first honorary rescue dogRecently, a 4-year-old dog named Baekgu in South Korea saved his owner's life. Now, the government has appointed him as South Korea's first honorary rescue dog. What does this mean? Rescue dogs help out in operations to save people.
Generally, they need a lot of training and tests. And only after that do they become official rescue dogs. But Baekgu did not get any training. He has become South Korea's first honorary rescue dog as a reward for his deeds. Baekgu's owner is a 90-year-old woman with dementia living in Hongseong, South Korea. Dementia is a brain disease that makes people forget about people, places, and even themselves.
On 25 August, the old woman had gone missing. When officials checked videos taken by security cameras, they saw her and the dog leaving the village. After searching for her for a very long time, they found her in a wet area, all cold and unable to get up. But Baekgu had stayed by her side and kept her warm. That's what saved her and she is recovering in a hospital now.
So, officials decided to reward Baekgu for his loyalty and service by making him South Korea's first honorary rescue dog.
Baekgu's back story
Baekgu was actually an abandoned dog that the old woman's family adopted three years ago. So, the family feels very grateful and happy for what he has done.
