Watch a video: Rare whale “megapod” seen in Australia

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Recently, a video captured an amazing sight – it shows a whale “megapod” – of more than 100 humpback whales surrounding a boat off the coast of Australia. A group of whales is called a “pod”. So, a whale “megapod” is a pod that is very big, consisting of many whales.

This new incident is a very rare event. It has been seen only once before in Australia.

It happened around a boat near Bermagui, which is about 380 kilometres from the city of Sydney. The megapod was swimming around that area as they were feeding on a large school (group) of fish.

In the video, the whales can be seen slapping their tails in the ocean, trying to herd the fish.

Whale migration

Every year, between April and November, the seas around Australia get a lot of whales. They come here from the Antarctic to eat and give birth. Their annual migration (trip) can cover up to 10,000 kilometers. Many people also come to the towns near the seaside to watch the whales. So, while a whale “megapod” is rare, you can certainly see many whales.
