A temple in Assam protects ‘extinct’ turtleThe Hayagriva Madhava temple in Assam has cared for and protected a species (family) of turtle which is known as the 'black softshell turtle'.

This type of turtle was declared extinct (vanished) in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2002.

The turtles are believed to be a rebirth of the Hindu god Vishnu. They are taken care of and live in the pond of the temple.
 	The temple authorities and the nature conservation group Good Earth, have released 16 black softshells to a nearby wildlife sanctuary in January 2019.
 	Good Earth also collects the eggs of turtle, takes good care of them till they hatch and then transfers them to the  Guwahati zoo.

The sacred belief of the people has saved the turtles!
