The world’s youngest astronomer

Nicole Oliveira is an 8-year-old girl living in Brazil, South America. Even though she is just eight years old, she has officially become the world’s youngest astronomer. Astronomers study space objects.

She is part of a NASA-affiliated programme looking for asteroids. The project is called Asteroid Hunters and it is run by an organisation called the International Astronomical Search Collaboration. The project aims to introduce young people to science by giving them a chance to make space discoveries of their own.

The world’s youngest astronomer has already found 18 asteroids as part of the project. Currently, she is also attending international seminars and meeting with Brazil’s top space and science figures.

Once her findings are confirmed, Oliveira will become the youngest person in the world to officially discover an asteroid. The current record belongs to an 18-year-old Italian boy named Luigi Sannino. She says she will name them after Brazilian scientists and members of her family.

Oliveira’s astronomy teacher says she is very good at spotting asteroids in images. Moreover, she likes to share her knowledge with other children.

Oliveira even has her own Youtube channel. She has interviewed important people like the Brazilian astronomer Duilia de Mello in the channel. In the future, she says wants to become an aerospace engineer.
