Hong Kong suspends extradition bill but protests continue

Hong Kong suspends extradition bill but protests continueAfter strong protests by Hong Kong residents against the extradition bill, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam suspended the bill on 18th June and has apologized for her handling of it.

However, protests still continue as protesters want the bill to be removed entirely, not just suspended. They also want Carrie Lam to resign as they feel that she may push for the bill another time.

A deadline was imposed by activist groups for Hong Kong’s government to meet demands including removing the extradition bill.
 	Other demands include investigating police tactics, releasing those arrested and dropping charges against them.
 	The deadline was Thursday (20th June) which has passed without an official response.

An activist group, the Civil Human Rights Front, has called for another protest on 1st July, the date of Hong Kong’s handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

The tension in Hong Kong also seems to have spread to the US, where students from Hong Kong and China are debating about the topic on social media and websites, asserting their opposite views.

The Chinese media has not been allowed to report on these protests.
