Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman to appear on the US coin.

Maya Angelou was an African-American poet, scholar and civil rights Activist. Recently, she has become the first black woman to appear on a US quarter.

The quarter coin is the US quarter coin worth 25 cents. Emily S. Damstra has designed this coin.  The coin is created as part of the American Woman Quarters Program. The American Woman Program will issue some special-edition coins, honouring some American women.

Quarter coin depicting Angelou

The quarter coin depicts young Maya Angelou stretching her arms. It seems like she is soaking up the sunlight that’s falling upon her.  A silhouette of a bird mirrors Angelou’s gesture behind her.

The bird silhouette is designed with reference to Angelou’s memoir “Why the Caged Bird Sings“.  Moreover,  the coin design is inspired by Angelou’s poetry and symbolizes the way that she lived her life.

Maya Angelou is one of the most influential 20th century American poets.

The program will further honour Chinese American film star, Anna May Wong, astronaut Sally Ride, American Cherokeeactivits, Wilma Mankiller and Nina Otero-Warren.

Isn’t it interesting to be remembered for your work? So, dear kids, be helpful to one and all. Stay happy and curious.
