Beaches in Chennai get new cleaning machines

Beaches in Chennai get new cleaning machinesMarina and Elliot are the two famous beaches in Chennai which have gotten cleaner recently.

The credit for the clean beaches goes to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) as they have set up 'beach cleaning machines' since 2018.

The machines have been set up under the Bharat Darshan project from the Tamil Nadu tourism department.
 	The cleaning machines are being used by attaching them to a tractor and then driven over the beach.
 	The machine collects waste items along with sand and then fine particles of sand are filtered out, leaving clean sand behind.
 	The cleaning time is from early morning till noon. It covers 2.5 acres of the beach per hour. 
 	The GCC has purchased 8 such machines (costing 84 lakhs each) this year in order to clean other beaches in Chennai.

Other cities like Mumbai and Bhubaneshwar are also making use of these machines.

Plastic pollution continues to be a big problem for the environment. These machines can help in ensuring that the beaches are clean for people to enjoy and also, more plastic doesn't get into the water.
