Bigfin squid discovered 20,000 feet under the sea.

Another new discovery! Isn’t it interesting to know about animals, birds that existed and we didn’t know about them?

You’ve watched this video of the bigfin squid which showcases its first glimpse. For those, who don’t know what a bigfin squid is, let’s find out together.

What is a squid?

A squid is an invertebrate animal. It has a soft body, large eyes, 8 arms and two tentacles.

Squids look cute with eight arms and large eyes. Bigfin squids are a group of squids or cephalopods. You must be wondering what are cephalopods?

Cephalopod is a member of class Cephalopoda that includes animals like squid, octopus, cuttlefish and more.

Bigfin squid discovered

A bigfin squid was discovered around 20,000 feet under the water in the Philippine Sea.

Philippine Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean. A team of researchers have discovered this bigfin squid.

The researchers spotted the squid just above the ocean floor. The distance recorded is 20,000 feet below the surface. This new bigfin squid is currently the record holder.

The researchers stated that multiple types of cephalopods can live in the upper parts of this pacific ocean.

Research Study

The researchers detected the squid in March 2021 earlier. They found it while researching the site of a US Navy destroyer that sank in 1944.

Now, they have recently detected the squid much deeper than they expected. Along with it, they also found four cirrate octopuses at the same place. The fins of these octopuses resemble elephant ears.

The new squid discovered was difficult to picturise but its features confirmed its identity. It has large black coloured fins and short tentacles.

Isn’t it a distinct animal? Stay connected with us for more such discoveries.
