Harbin International Ice & Snow Festival – Imagination meets Ice

The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival opened on Dec. 25, 2021, and will last for around 2 months till 28 February 2022. Harbin (located in northeast China) will transform into a kingdom of ice and snow. Attending the festival is a dream come true!

The ice and snow sculptures were opened for public viewing from 25 December 2021. Special celebrations that include fireworks take place on New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year (the Spring Festival), and the Lantern Festival.

Global participation and celebrations

Artists from nearly 15 countries come from different parts of the world to participate in the annual competition. The artists utilise the snow of the Songhua River and create magnificent sculptures.

The artists are well equipped with various tools to create large sculptures. As the water is deionized it gives the sculptures a breathtaking transparent look. The addition of multicolour lights for the evening shows takes one’s breath away.

Grand sculptures, ice lantern exhibitions, skiing and winter swimming in the Songhua River are some of the key activities that take place at the festival.

During the Christmas period, the sculptures are not yet fully completed, but it’s a great time to see how the sculptures are being carved and made by the artists. The sculptures are well established from mid to late January, however, because of the New Year holiday period, there are very few visitors.

After the Lantern Festival (15 February 2022) the number of visitors greatly reduces so one gets to enjoy the spectacular festival at an easy pace.

This year, the theme for the festival is  “Magical Harbin, Ice Snow Charming China“.
