Safer Internet Day, 8 February

Every year 8 February is celebrated as Safer Internet Day to raise awareness of issues arising from using the internet. This could range from cyberbullying to internet fraud to social networking.

It would worthwhile to brush up on some of the key terms used often to explain the importance of this day.

What is European Union (EU)?

European Union (EU) is consists of a group of European countries that act as one unit in the world economy.

What is Insafe Network?

Insafe is a European network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs). Every national Centre implements awareness and educational campaigns to create safe and a better internet.

Safer Internet Day is now celebrated in approximately 200 countries worldwide.

Theme

This year’s theme is “Together for a better internet”. It calls upon all of us to join together to make the internet a safe and better place for all and especially for children and young people.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, friend or family member, each of us has a role to play to make the internet a safe place for one another. Better Internet for Kids gives you information, guidance and resources to educate yourself around online issues.

Back to basics

Information on the internet could feel overwhelming. We realise the importance of online safety and it would be worthwhile to share these tips to keep yourself educated and safe while spending time online –

  1. Dialogue about cybersecurity: A dialogue about cybersecurity will help your child to educate himself/herself. Remind them not to share personal information, pictures on public platforms without prior consent.
  2. Strong passwords: Inform your children about using strong passwords. Many times browsers such as Safari and Google Chrome will offer suggestions for strong passwords. Never share passwords with anyone online.
  3. Quality time online: Connect with your family and friends online. Educate your child about inappropriate behaviour and age-restricted content. Help them take advantage of online tools that promote awareness, knowledge and well-being.
  4. Healthy online habits: Whether is Zoom or Google Meet calls for classroom activities, encourage children to respect others and behave in a cordial manner. Educate children about advertisements and how to spend time wisely.

We hope our readers stay safe and continue to enjoy the process of learning each day!
