Lata Mangeshkar – Nightingale of Bollywood

One of the most famous Indian playback singers and music directors, Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of Bollywoodwas cremated with full state honours. She sang for more than hundreds of songs for Bollywood.  Her career spanned more than four decades and she sang thousands of songs for almost 36  languages. She lent her beautiful voice to almost every emotion and was famously called the “Nightingale of Bollywood”. To those who know her personally, affectionately call her “Didi” or sister.

Personal Life

Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore on 28 September 1929. She began learning music at the early age of five from her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar. He was a well known Marathi theatre actor. After her father’s death, the family moved to Mumbai.

Lata Mangeshkar started singing for Marathi movies when she was a teenager to support her family. She even acted in a few movies but her heart was always in singing. Her career started seeing professional success as she sang a haunting song “Aayega Aanewala” for the movie Mahal in 1949.

She is the eldest of five siblings who always led a quiet humble life in Mumbai.

Awards and recognitions

Lata Mangeshkar was the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in England in 1978. She has received many awards and recognitions during her lifetime. The Government of India bestowed on her the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. She is also a recipient of many more awards – the Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan and more.

She’s only the second vocalist after M.S. Subbulakshmi to receive the Bharat Ratna. France also conferred on her its highest civilian award –Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2007.
