World Zoonoses Day – 6th July

World Zoonoses Day – 6th JulyHow many of you have a pet at home?  Do you vaccinate your pet regularly? What happens, if we don’t vaccinate them? Yes, you are correct. Our pet will catch diseases.

Sometimes these diseases can spread to humans too. Such diseases, that can be passed between animals and humans are called zoonotic diseases.

'World Zoonoses Day' is observed every year on 6 July to create awareness of zoonotic diseases.

On this day, programmes are conducted to aware about the prevention and treatment of zoonotic diseases.

Zoonotic diseases can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi.
 	Scientists estimate that more than 6 out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are spread from animals.
 	There are about 150 known zoonotic diseases.

This year, this day has become even more important as we face the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 is a disease caused by a coronavirus which mostly affects only animals. But in certain cases, like COVID-19, it spread to humans, creating disaster.

Why do we observe this day on 6 July?

On 6 July 1885, Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against Rabies virus, a zoonotic disease.

How to avoid zoonotic diseases?

Wash hands with soap and clean water.
 	Preventive clothing for bites from mosquitoes, ticks and fleas.
 	Avoid bites and scratches from animals.
 	Store and handle food safely and cook properly.
