James Webb Space Telescope captures first starlight

Recommended for Secondary Grades

NASA’s James Webb Space telescope sees starlight.

We know that James Webb Space Telescope was launched on 24th December 2022. It has captured its first starlight.

The first target of the NASA Webb space telescope was a bright star which is 258 light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.

First starlight by NASA’s telescope

The telescope will seek light from the stars and galaxies that formed 14 billion years ago. The Webb space telescope will examine the atmosphere of alien worlds to detect any signs of life.

The 6.5 metre, gold-plated mirror of the James Webb space telescope is the largest mirror launched into space. The infrared camera on the telescope has snapped the picture of the first starlight, it gazed upon.

The camera snapped the picture of the mirror as one segment of the telescope gazed upon the star. Look at the pictures issued by NASA below:

NASA has released the selfie, in which the starlight is emitting from all the mirror segments. The 18 points of starlight resemble bright fireflies flying against the night sky.

Stay tuned with us to get updates about the James Webb Space Telescope. Stay curious.
