Closing Ceremony at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022
The Olympic flame has been extinguished in Beijing. And, this brings the most tightly controlled Winter Olympic Games in history to a close. Furthermore, in the more than two years after the coronavirus first appeared in China, it was the second pandemic Olympics.
Zhang Yimou, the famed Chinese film director who previously oversaw the 2008 Summer Olympics ceremonies, was in charge of the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022.
The President of the International Olympic Committee praised China and also thanked the Chinese people for organising the Games safely.
COVID restrictions
Participants were restricted to a COVID-safe bubble. They were required to take daily tests, wear masks, and follow tight protocols. Also, some athletes were unable to attend because of the epidemic.
The Olympic flag was handed over by the president of the International Olympic Committee and the mayor of Beijing to the mayors of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy, which will host the 2026 Winter Games.
Final Medals Tally
Team Norway is at the top position winning 16 Gold medals, 8 Silver and 13 Bronze. The second position is held by Team Germany with 12 Gold, 10 Silver and 5 Bronze. The host nation is in the third position with 9 Gold medals, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze.
