Gran Turismo has a new champion, Sony’s Artificial Intelligence “Sophy Gran Turismo”. A superhuman racing Artificial Intelligence agent, the idea is extremely interesting. 

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a computer or a robot that is controlled by a computer to do things that are usually done by humans because they require wisdom and judgement.

What is Machine learning?

Machine learning is a way to look at data that makes it easier to make forecasting techniques. It is a branch of artificial intelligence that is based on the idea that machines can learn from data, find patterns, and make decisions without a lot of help from humans.

The world of Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is a series of video games about racing simulations. Gran Turismo games are made for PlayStations and are meant to look, and run like a lot of different cars. Most of them are licenced versions of real-world cars.

Car racing games and Artificial Intelligence

The challenges to teaching computer systems how to drive in car racing games are plenty. For example: In order to speed around a corner on the fastest “racing line” without losing control, race car drivers must brake, steer, and accelerate at just the right times. Furthermore, if you know how much friction there is, you can teach a self-driving car how to do a lap at the fastest speed possible. This is what some cars have already done. Moreover, having to share space with other cars makes this a lot more complicated.

For the first time, scientists have figured out how to solve the problem virtually. They accomplished this task by teaching an artificial intelligence programme to outrace humans, at the very realistic racing game Gran Turismo Sport. New ideas for how to make self-driving cars work in the real world could be based on the findings.

Gran Turismo new champion: Artificial Intelligence

Gran Turismo Sophy is an artificial intelligence and machine learning agent that can race against, and improve the gaming experience of the best Gran Turismo drivers. 

The technology behind Sophy was made with help from a 25-person team at Sony Artificial Intelligence. The team used most machine learning technology to make Sophy. Thereafter, Sophy was put to the test by some of the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world, and she won.
