United Nations ocean treaty to be signed

Recommended for Middle Grades

Due to human activities, oceans are at a risk. A treaty must be signed to protect the oceans from exploitation caused due to human activities.

Global Ocean Treaty is in discussion at the United Nations Organization(UNO).

Purpose of UN Ocean Treaty

The Ocean treaty will set a legal framework to protect the ocean and its biodiversity from getting exploited.

Oceans hold a variety of ecosystems and species. Human activities, seabed mining and shipping vessels have put the oceans at exploitation risk.

Measures to protect the oceans

The UN General Assembly developed a treaty on the conversation and sustainable use of marine diversity. The first three sessions or negotiations have taken place in 2018 and 2019.

The final session was scheduled for March 2020 but it was postponed due to the pandemic. It is now being conducted from 7th March to 18th March at the UN headquarters in New York.

The ongoing session focuses on saving ocean biodiversity. The ocean functions as an interconnected system. The ocean treaty will protect the marine animals, habitats and oceans from the destruction caused by human activities.

The treaty will help to establish a structure to protect the oceans. In this way, the oceans will continue providing the benefits such as flexibility in changing climate, maintenance of ecosystem and conservation of marine life.
