Saudi schools introduces Yoga as Sports

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Saudi schools are planning to introduce yoga as a sport. It has been a topic of discussion between the Saudi Yoga Committee and the Saudi School Sports Federation for a long time.

What is yoga?

Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices to control your mind and body.

Introduction of yoga

On 9th March,  the Saudi Yoga Committee(SYC) and Saudi School Sports Federation held a lecture to discuss the benefits of yoga. They discussed the future of yoga in schools.

The lecture on yoga was attended by school principals and physical education teachers. They also discussed the possibility that yoga can help in increasing the number of students participating in sports.

The Ministry of Commerce had already approved the teaching and practice of yoga as a sport in November 2017. But, it has been under discussion.

Benefits of yoga

Yoga is a sport that the people who practice it will have a calm mind and healthier physique. It will help in the development of the students from both the physical and mental aspects. Introducing yoga in the school curriculum would help the children and benefit their families as well.

Al Marwaai founded the Arab Yoga Foundation in 2006. International Yoga Federation recognised the Yoga foundation in 2009. It educates people about the health benefits of yoga and also conducts courses and seminars.

The country’s first yoga festival was conducted at Juman Park in January 2020. More than 1,000 people from Saudi Arabia attended it.
