Bringing ice-age animals to virtual life

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The ice-age animals have been extinct for more than 10,000 years. Scientists are trying to bring them back to life virtually.

Virtual models of ice-age animals

Scientists have developed three-dimensional and animated models of some ice-age animals that were found in the site of Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles.

They gathered detailed information about the extinct animals from photos of skeletons and their behaviours in modern-day species. They associated with a company that made video games. An artist made the 3-D images, added fur and skin and then animated them.

Researchers made animated models of plants and animals like mammoths, sabre-toothed cats and mastodons.

How to watch the virtual animals?

After creating the 3-D models, researchers created an augmented reality app to see the ice-age creatures on the museum ground.

Visitors need to download the app on their smartphones. Holding the phones in front of the museum entrance would let them see the animated version of the animals. The 3-D models are of lower resolution, but they can be viewed on all kinds of smartphones.

You can watch this video of ice-age animals posted on youtube.
