Mysterious stone jars discovered in India
Researchers have discovered mysterious jars in India. They assumed that these jars have been used for burial practices in ancient India.
65 sandstone jars were found scattered in four sites in the North-Eastern state of Assam. The jars vary in shape and size, for example, some jars are tall and cylindrical while others are partially or fully buried in the ground.
Discovery of the stone jars
The discovery of the stone jars included researchers from three universities in India and Australia. The research was led by Tilok Thakuria from North-Eastern Hill University and Uttam Bathari from Gauhati University.
Nicholas Skopal, a researcher at Australian National University said that the ancient jars were filled with cremated remains, beads and other artefacts. The researchers are looking forward to doing further research on these jars.
As per researchers, 700 jars have been discovered in Assam and they existed before 400 BC. Similar jars have been found in Laos and Indonesia earlier.
Similar jars found in Laos
Jars in Laos were discovered in 2016 and belonged to Xieng Khouang province around 2,000 years ago.
The size of the jars found in Assam and Laos are very similar. Though, the jars found in Assam are round in shape while the jars in Laos are cylindrical in shape.
