National Institutional Ranking Framework is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education to rank institutions of higher education in India. The NIRF framework was approved by MHRD and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development in 2015.

Working of NIRF

NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) outlines the methodology to rank institutions across the country. The framework ranks educational institutions on five parameters as listed below:

  • Teaching
  • Learning and Resources
  • Research and Professional Practice
  • Graduation Outcomes
  • Perception

Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan said that NIRF will have a unified system for assessment and ranking will play a major role in enhancing the quality of higher education. The institutes all over India are ranked across 11 categories:

  • Overall national ranking
  • Universities
  • Engineering
  • College
  • Medical
  • Management
  • Pharmacy
  • Law
  • Architecture
  • Dental
  • Research

Importance of NIRF ranking

National Institutional Ranking Framework is India’s own system of ranking education institutions in a context that is reasonable in the Indian context.

NIRF ranking is one of the key decision criteria for admission to institutes. The NIRF is in its sixth year and it continues to rank only among Indian higher education institutes. Though, the discussion to make the framework global are still on.

The institutes which have higher NIRF rankings can get more admission interest. Moreover, the NIRF grading also makes the institute eligible for inclusion in University Grants Commission (UGC) list for receiving financial assistance.

Top institutes in the NIRF ranking list

In the year 2022, approximately 6,000 education institutes participated in the NIRF. Amongst the top 10 research institutes, IITs have dominated the list with six positions.

  • IIT Madras has topped the NIRF list in the overall category and its position remains unchanged.
  • IIM Ahmedabad topped the list in the Management category.
  • IISc Bengaluru has topped the list in the research and university category.
  • AIIMS, Delhi is the best medical college in India.
  • National Law School of India University, Bengaluru is the top law school in the country.
  • Miranda House institute has topped in the Colleges category.

India has 45,000-degree colleges and over 1,000 universities and 1,500 top institutes. The Indian institutes registered for NIRF rankings have increased over the years. NIRF rankings started off with only 4 categories and this year, in 2022, the list was released for 11 categories.
