CORE vocabulary program helps in developing language skills
Language has become an important part of the current education system. A special program known as CORE vocabulary has been implemented in some special classes being held at Greenridge Elementary School, US. Allison Martin teaches these special classes. She is a childhood special education teacher and she has implemented this system of CORE vocabulary.
CORE vocabulary contains a set of simple words and symbols that are used by people at all age levels. These words can help the children to start communication. She teaches to children between the age group of 3 to 5-year olds.
Students of elementary school have limited knowledge of a language. So, using the new vocabulary system has helped the students in developing their interest and learning in language development. Allison Martin stated that with the help of pictures, words and symbols, the students have also been able to communicate in a better way. The students have also started to pair the word while pointing to the picture. This is a positive outcome of the program.
Nicole Smith is the speech pathologist at Greenridge Elementary School. She introduced the CORE vocabulary program with the help of Kent ISD (see below).
The program benefits not only the students who are enrolled but also the other students who have developed language skills as well. Allison Martin also revealed that she and Nicole Smith are in the initial stages of the CORE vocabulary program. Moreover, they are also expecting parent participation in this program.
Kent ISD involvement in CORE Vocabulary program
Kent ISD stands for Kent Intermediate School District. It is an educational service agency in the Grand Rapids Public School, Michigan.
Suzanna Ruskusky is a communication consultant for Kent ISD. Suzanna said that they have observed the classroom activities, and have now provided professional development for implementing the CORE vocabulary program. Moreover, every district in the Kent ISD service area has implemented CORE vocabulary at some level.
CORE vocabulary has proved to be a great asset for students to develop their language skills and to bridge the communication gap between them.
