Ed Leader – Dr. Thakur Mulchandani, Sunrise English Private School, Abu Dhabi
Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also are trying to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.
So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Thakur Mulchandani. He is the Principal of Sunrise English Private School, Abu Dhabi. Sunrise English Private School is affiliated with the CBSE and was established in the year 1988 with the sole aim of imparting quality education to expatriate Indian children. The primary aim of the school is to keep alive the spirit of learning, through moulding the total personality of the students in perfect discipline.
When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? I stepped into the field of education around 30 years ago. My love for children and learning motivated me to be an educator. The intense love that I had for learning and acquiring knowledge in such a way so that I can impart it to the children created in me a passion for teaching. I was also eager to make a difference in the whole world.
Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success? These are some challenges I feel I have faced in my journey as an educator: 1. Balancing the different learning needs of students. 2. Respecting expectations from parents and stakeholders. 3. Helping parents and students meet long-term goals.
Teaching can be challenging at times, but as long as you really care about your students and really want to help them, both with the materials in your class and their struggles outside your class, it can also be very rewarding. I learned to help them in this way and thus could overcome challenges that arose on the way.
What are the changes have you observed over the years in the field of education? Are you happy with these changes?
1. Increased diversity: there are more differences among students than there used to be. Diversity has made teaching more fulfilling as a career, but also made it more challenging in certain respects.
2. Increased instructional technology: Classrooms, schools, and students use computers more often today than in the past for research, writing, communicating, and keeping records.
3. Greater accountability in education: Both the public and educators themselves pay more attention than in the past to how to assess learning and good quality teaching. The attention has increased the importance of education to the public and improved education for some students. But it has also created new constraints on what teachers can teach and what students learn.
4. Increased professionalism of teachers: Now more than ever, teachers are able to assess the quality of their own work as well as that of colleagues and can take steps to improve it when necessary. Professionalism improves teaching. However, by creating higher standards of practice, it can also create greater worries about whether particular teachers and schools are “good enough”.
These are the aforesaid changes that I feel very happy with, as an educator.
What changes would you like to see in the field of Education? What role can the various stakeholders like the government, teachers, students and parents play in this?
As an educator, I would like to see an innovation that is the need of the hour. It is to allow flexibility in the completion of a course to allow genuine breaks and also allow the student to pace his education based on his comfort. Further, we could have a system in which the students can acquire learning on a continuous basis and get certified upon completion of certain milestones – say a certificate after writing an exam after six months, a diploma after a year, and a degree after two years — with the stipulation that they should complete the degree within four years of starting.
This will allow a good blend of theory and practice and also minimize dropouts during the education process.
Share your message with the aspiring teachers and leaders of tomorrow.
The message that I would like to share – Teachers can work all over the world. Teachers can change the lives of children. As a teacher, we have the ability to reach out and be a supporter and a role model for kids who need it. Teaching is the best job in the world. Not only because it is a noble profession, but it also allows us to be continuously creative and be better professionally. In every lesson, you can hone your creativity by adding interest to capture your students’ attention. A teacher is the only person who can touch lives and create a sea change in this world of endless opportunities.
Share your message for your and Curious Times students. A teacher’s profession teaches all other professions. I urge you all to chose this noble profession, a career that gives utmost satisfaction and content. To be in the current generation and at the same time assist knowledge transmission to the progeny is the most commendable of all jobs. Therefore train your minds and souls to indulge in it.
