Ed Leader – Mrs Surjeet Khanna, Delhi Public School, Greater Faridabad
Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.
So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Mrs Surjeet Khanna. She is the Principal of Delhi Public School, Greater Faridabad. This school is an initiative of the Delhi Public School Society that aims to promote quality education to the children of our country, especially of Faridabad and adjoining areas.
Here is a short edited excerpt of the one-on-one conversation of Mrs Surjeet Khanna with Deepti Beri, Director at Curious Times. Also, watch the full video of the conversation at the end of this excerpt.
When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? I had three aspirations – to become a civil servant or an actress or a journalist. But that was not where life was leading me. After my Masters degree, I joined the B.Ed course at Jamia University and I went for teacher training at DPS Mathura, which really made me fall in love with teaching. Later, I joined as a teacher at DPS Noida, where I learned a lot and really pushed me towards education. Then, I planted my roots then and I grew.
A teacher’s new role in terms of advancement in technology. The greatest technology is that of connect. A huge plethora of information and technology is available now. But one must have a plan as to how to use it. Technology is only as good as the user. So, teachers need to update themselves and must also familiarise themselves with new technology. At our school, we wanted to incorporate technology from day 1 but teachers did need a bit of nudging. But when the pandemic hit, the IT team of our school really stepped up. We got a lot of training and there was even a lot of collaboration among the teachers. Even now, there is a good amount of technology use happening and I feel we will do well with online schooling, no matter what happens.
Share your message with the aspiring teachers and leaders of tomorrow. You should love life, with a willingness to learn and share. That is the first prerequisite to be a teacher. Integrity and honestly are non-negotiable. You can grow in your students only what you have. There has to be a strong element of flexibility and creativity. We have some teachers who constantly are coming up with new ideas and it is amazing for productivity and the school spirit, and pushing the children to reach their potential. Of course, proficiency in language and comfort with technology is also quite important. Language is especially important for a school like ours where English is spoken only in school and not at home.
Share your message for your and Curious Times students. You will face uncertainty in life; we all do, just like the pandemic now. But you are conquerors; walk with strength and confidence. Growing up is exciting and tough but it is something you can do well. Your school is listening and watching and so you must reach out to adults who can hear you and support you. Be positive and take an active role in your own development. Each day should matter. The dots of life connect over a period of time. The stronger the dots, the stronger the line. Physical health is very important. Appreciate what you have and that is so important.
