Ed Leader – Ms. Prema Muralidhar, Woodlem Park School, Ajman, UAE
Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.
So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Ms. Prema Muralidhar. She is the Principal of Woodlem Park School, Ajman, UAE. Here is a short excerpt of the one-on-one conversation of Ms. Prema Muralidhar with Deepti Beri, Director at Curious Times. Also, watch the full video of the conversation at the end of this excerpt.
When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? The dedicated work of my parents motivated me to give back something to the community. That’s how I decided to be an educator who can contribute to the betterment of our society.
I started as a kindergarten teacher in 1985 in Tamil Nadu. That’s where my journey as an educator started and I was so fortunate to teach so many young children. I’m from an army background and my father always encouraged me. Teaching for me was and is a passion. I wanted to be a role model for the youth of tomorrow. I consider myself a lifelong learner and education has and will always be my cup of tea. I’m so proud of all the students I have taught across the year and that’s what motivates me too.
Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success? I love the word ‘challenges’. Early on, I went abroad to teach, leaving my family in India and it was not easy at all. There was hardly any technology at that time. However, I was fortunate to have a prestigious organisation select me and send me for a new challenge and I’m always so thankful for their mentorship. While I did find the assignment difficult initially, but my husband supported me a lot and I cannot thank him enough for always encouraging me. Eventually, after the initial hiccup, I did great. So, whatever you do, have your own style and celebrate yourself. Self introspecting and learning to say “yes I can” is important. All this can help you overcome challenges. Every challenge is a beautiful opportunity for learning. Also, always be learning and adapting to new situations. That is very important.
As a leader, the biggest challenge is aligning meaningful, continual, professional development programmes for teachers.
Share your message with the aspiring teachers and leaders of tomorrow. A leader’s role is a responsibility as much as an opportunity. Keep cultivating skills. Keeping the bigger picture in mind is very important. As leaders, you must build more leaders.
Share your message for your and Curious Times students. Use the internet as a tool for education, not just for entertainment. It will give you far-reaching effects of becoming a real educated person. You don’t need teachers or classrooms to educate you anymore if you know how to use the internet wisely. Remember that every choice you make shapes your character. So choose wisely because you are never too young to make an impact on anybody.
