Education is an integral part of a child’s upbringing. We, at Curious Times, have made it our aim to ensure that we also play an active role in imparting the right knowledge to all the Curious children. As such, we also try to ensure that we are always in touch with the leaders in education today and learning from them. After all, it is important to learn from the best.

So, today, we present to you a one-on-one conversation with Seema Handa. She is the Principal of Eklavya School, Jalandhar. The school aims to nurture the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual growth of each child as an individual entity.

When did you decide to step into the world of education? What motivated you to become an Educator? I started my journey in education in the year 2000. It had always been on the horizon and the desire to be a part of the education revolution in India was very strong. Just as the 90s belonged to telecommunications, the 21st century will see a revolution in Indian Education. This firm belief propelled me to become an active participant in this journey.

Share some of the challenges you have faced in your career journey. How did you convert those challenges into the pillars of success? The biggest challenge was to understand the dynamics of parents, students and teachers. We are all striving for the same result and yet we appear to be working as opposing forces. We should keep the child at the centre of the triangle – the School, the Teachers and the Parents, and all must strive to enhance the inherent potential of each child. This very struggle has become the motto of Eklavya School – discover yourself, be your own light, make your own path.

What are the changes have you observed over the years in the field of education? Are you happy with these changes? The recent introduction of NEP 2020 is a culmination of years of struggles and challenges. It is the beginning of a new era in Indian Education. The paradigm shift in how we deliver and understand knowledge has put us on a trajectory of course correction for the future. Implementation of the spirit and intention behind NEP will be a huge challenge for each Teacher but it is a welcome step.

What changes would you like to see in the field of Education? What role can the various stakeholders like the government, teachers, students and parents play in this? As I mentioned, implementation is key. But I would like to see education be a journey, where each child has a unique and individual experience. The journey of mass education should be modified to the needs of each child and delivered as per his need.
The government’s role in redefining policy is crucial to achieving reach and scale. Parents have to shed their inhibitions and trust the Educator to deliver the best possible experience for their child. Teachers must overcome their inertia and teach from the heart. And most importantly, the students must engage actively in the learning process.

Share your message with the aspiring teachers and leaders of tomorrow. We are living in times of flux! As front-line warriors, we must be the change that we want to see in the field of education. We all have huge challenges to overcome, on both the professional and personal fronts. Let us not lose our focus and instead, let us put our energy into creating thinking and feeling citizens of tomorrow so that we can proudly look back and say – he/she is my student.

Share your message for your and Curious Times students. Dear Students, you are our tomorrow! For decades to come, you will be the generation that overcame all adversities and they made you come out stronger, more resilient, and totally independent. Your education will be reflected not in your paper degrees but in your social and emotional maturity. Many new and unforeseen opportunities will await you. Your creativity and adversity quotient is what will determine your success.
It gives me immense pleasure to wish each one of you all happiness and a great future!
