NCERT rationalises syllabus for classes 6 to 12

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) has removed many topics of classes 6 to 12 from the textbooks in order to rationalise the syllabus. To ease the burden on the students for the academic year 2022-23, NCERT has rationalised the syllabus.

As a part of syllabus rationalisation. 30% of the syllabus has been removed. The process started in December 2021 and now it is complete.

Reasons behind dropping the syllabus content

The reasons that NCERT has dropped the syllabus content are as follows.

  • The most important reason for removing the syllabus content is to ease the load on students due to the COVID-19 disturbance in the last 2 years.
  • The content is removed due to content overlapping, that is, the same topics covered in different classes.
  • Some topics have been removed on the basis of difficulty levels or the irrelevance of the topic in the present context.

Topics removed from the NCERT syllabus

Some major topics that are removed from the syllabi are:

  • Class 7 Science syllabi have removed the chapter on Weather, climate and adaptations of animals to climate.
  • Class 8 Science textbook has removed the chapter on Pollution of air and water.
  • Industrial Revolution which happens to be important is removed from the Class 11 syllabus.
  • Gujarat Riots, Cold War and Mughal Courts are important topics that are removed from the Class 12 syllabus. Other important topics which are removed are Indian Democracy, social movements, patterns of social inequality and the ecosystem.
