Adidas is set to work with Indian company to cut plastic use

Adidas is set to work with Indian company to cut plastic useAdidas has announced that it will no longer be using virgin (new, unused) plastic for its sportswear products by 2024.

The Maharashtra-based company, Polygenta Technology Limited will help Adidas in its resolve.
 	Polygenta is upcycling* discarded PET* bottles to make high-quality polyester yarn for Adidas products.
 	It uses a unique tech to break down plastic into polyester yarn.
 	Right now, the firm has the capacity to convert 30 tonnes of PET into yarn in a day.
 	It plans to increase up to 8-10 million bottles a day in the next 2 years.

According to the UN, around 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year. Out of this, 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the oceans.

PET bottles are the main contributors to this waste.
 	Moreover, this upcycling process consumes far less water and energy than conventional manufacturing but costs a bit more.

*Downcycling: Recycling a product in a way that its value gets decreases.

*Upcycling: Recycling a product in a way that its value is increased.

*PET: PET stands for Polyethylene terephthalate. It is the most commonly used type of plastic and used to make bottles, containers, etc.
