Air India First to Implement the ‘No additional Fuel’ initiative

Air India First to Implement the ‘No additional Fuel’ initiative A new initiative was undertaken by Indian aviation last week. Air India's flight from New Delhi to Hyderabad on 29 April 2019 flew without 'additional fuel for an alternate destination'.

Aviation norms till now made it mandatory for passenger airplanes to carry additional fuel.

This extra fuel would act as a back-up in case special circumstances (like bad weather) do not allow the aircraft to land at its originally intended destination. The extra fuel can be used to fly the aircraft to an alternate destination.

The new initiative is only applicable where destination airports have more than one runway for landing as well as have good weather. In case the original runway is not free, the second runway serves as a landing backup (instead of going to a separate airport itself as a backup).

Air India has stated that they will implement this initiative for all their flights coming to Hyderabad since Hyderabad airport has a backup runway and mostly clear weather.

Expected impact of 'no additional fuel' initiative:

A Boeing 777 aircraft bound from New-Delhi to Hyderabad would need at least 4 tons extra fuel under the original rules for an alternate destination airport.

To carry this much extra weight would consume 140kg of additional fuel.

So the new initiative will allow such a flight to carry about 4140kg less fuel.

The initiative has a positive impact on both fuel conservation and emission reduction.

The initiative is a joint effort by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Director General of Civil Aviation, Air Traffic Control, India Meteorological Department and four airlines - Air India, Air Asia, Indigo and Spicejet. Air India is the first to implement it.
