Ancient Egyptian artefacts found in Necropolis at Saqqara

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Egyptian archaeologists have found a trove of artefacts in the ancient Necropolis of Saqqara. The artefacts include 250 mummies and 100 bronze statues of ancient Egyptian gods.  The artefacts are dated around 2,500 years ago.

Important Details

  • The ancient artefacts were found at the Cemetery of ancient animals at Saqqara. It is a temple complex which once belonged to the Egyptian goddess Bast or Bastet. The goddess was worshipped in the cat form.
  • This temple complex was later renamed when archaeologists discovered other types of mummified animals and statues of different Egyptian gods there.
  • The discovery of the artefacts was reported on 31st May 2022. The mummies, statues and other artefacts were laid for display in front of Saqqara’s Step Pyramid of Djoser during the announcement of the discovery.

Site at Saqqara

  • The artefacts found at Saqqara are from the late period of Egypt. But this site is much older. Mustafa Waziri, the Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities stated that earlier, a tomb of a priest was found at Saqqara. It was named Wahtye.
  • Other than Wahtye, seven other tombs were also discovered at the site. Three tombs were from Egypt’s new kingdom period and four from the old kingdom period.

  • The Necropolis at Saqqara is near the desert plateau about 15.5 miles, south of Cairo. The ancient burial ground has been the site for archaeologists to do the research work since 2018.
  • The latest discovery of artefacts includes 150 bronze statues of ancient Egyptian gods. They have also found two painted wooden statues of goddesses Isis and Neftis or Nephthys. The two goddesses are portrayed as a protector of a coffin and their faces are made from layers of gold leaf.
  • The research is still going on in Necropolis at Saqqara. Isn’t it interesting? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
