Animals adopt too! A small dolphin adopts big baby whale

Did you know that just as people, animals adopt too. Let’s ready this lovely story about how one animal adopts another.

The Far Out Ocean Research Collective is a wildlife organisation in New Zealand. They study sea animals like dolphins in order to save them.

Recently, scientists from the organisation found that a female bottlenose dolphin has adopted a baby pilot whale! The dolphin treats the whale as if it was her own baby!

The scientists believe that the dolphin adopted the young whale over a month ago.

The whale is a type of whale called a long-finned pilot whale. While it is named a “whale”, it is actually a type of dolphin. But it is much bigger than a bottlenose dolphin.

This means that the baby whale will grow four times bigger than its adopted mom!

This is not the first time bottlenose dolphins have adopted babies of other animals. But size difference is not very common.

Watch a video about bottlenose dolphins below:

There are so many animals in the world. Some live on land, some on trees, some in water and some fly up in the sky. Some are fun and playful and some quite dangerous too. Sometimes they work in teams but some prefer to be alone. But if we look carefully there is so much we can learn from them too! The way they take care of their babies or the way they learn to survive on their own as they grow up. Can you think of some of the qualities that you love about animals?
