Artificial Intelligence helps diagnose breast cancer
Recommended for AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be helping to shape the future of healthcare.
Recently, it also performed well in diagnosing breast cancer in a study conducted by an international team of researchers.
The research study
- Researchers from Google Health and Imperial College London, designed and trained a computer model on X-ray images from nearly 29,000 women.
- The resulting algorithm outperformed radiologists and doctors in reading mammograms.
- Unlike the doctors who have the patient’s medical history, the AI model was only shown anonymous mammograms (X-ray images).
- In the current UK’s National Health Service (NHS) system, 2 radiologists analyse each woman’s X-ray.
- The study results showed that the AI model was as good as the current double-reading system of 2 doctors.
- There was a reduction in false positives when a mammogram is incorrectly diagnosed as abnormal.
- Similarly, there was a reduction in false negatives where cancer is missed.
Will AI completely take over from humans?
Not likely. Of course, this research study proves that AI could help in better diagnosis while freeing up radiologists for other tasks.
However, a radiologist would always remain in charge of the diagnosis.
The research still in its early stages. However, it is possible to make the screening process more accurate and efficient in the future, thus reducing the waiting and worrying for patients.
