An unfortunate incident

The Indian Army lost seven heroes to an avalanche in the Kameng sector in Arunachal Pradesh. The army personnel were on a routine patrol and unfortunately stuck in bad weather conditions.  The Indian Army had acted swiftly with rescue operations as soon as they received the news of the soldiers trapped under an avalanche. Unfortunately, the rescue operations recovered their bodies with no survivors.

It would be a good idea for us to get back to basics on the concept of an avalanche.

What is an avalanche?

An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, such as a hill or mountain.

High Altitude and bad weather

Kameng sector in Arunachal Pradesh is located at an altitude of nearly 14000 feet. The area had been witnessing heavy snowfall for the last few days. Avalanches typically cause a snow slide down a slope. The ball of snow could travel at speeds of nearly 90 km per hour. Although there are several reasons that could cause an avalanche, the most common are steep slopes, earthquakes, temperature changes or wind drifting.

Our soldiers receive adequate training in mountain craft, ice craft and survival techniques in snow terrain mountains. Moreover, the Indian Army is also equipped to handle such emergencies with modern equipment like helicopters, UAV’s, snow scooters, mountain clothing and equipment.

Our heartfelt condolences to the soldiers’ families and we hope for nothing but positivity, hope and strength during these stressful times.
