Australia imposes permanent ban on tourist climbs to ancient UluruAustralia has officially stopped all tourist climbs to Uluru after today, 25 October 2019.

Officials closed the site officially at 4 p.m. local time.
 	It is now illegal to climb the rock and anyone caught doing so could be fined thousands of dollars.
 	The last few days have seen hundreds of tourist rush to climb the rock for the last time.

What is Uluru and why has it been closed to tourist climbs?

Uluru rock (also known as Ayers Rock) is an ancient large sandstone rock formation in the Northern Territory in Australia.
 	Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal (indigenous) people of the area.
 	For decades now, the Anangu have petitioned to close tourist climbs to Uluru as it is of great spiritual and cultural importance to them.
 	Then, in 2017, the board of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, where Uluru is located, voted to close it off to tourists by 26 October 2019. They took the decision due to its spiritual significance as well as for safety and environmental concerns.
 	The Anangu have expressed their relief and joy that this day has finally come.

On 26 October 1985, the Australian government also returned ownership of Uluru to the Anangu. The agreement was that the Aṉangu would rent it back to the National Parks and Wildlife agency for 99 years and that it would be jointly managed.
