Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Bappi Lahiri, whose real name is “Alokesh Lahiri” passed away on 15 February. He was popularly known as Bollywood’s Disco King! He was a singer, musician and above all loved to perform, and make music. In addition, Bappi Lahiri popularised disco tunes using a synthesiser. Not many people know, but in live concerts, people would chant, “Look! Bappi Lahiri – Bollywood’s Disco King!”.

He loved wearing sunglasses and gold jewellery. In public appearances, he would stack his neck and hands with gold chains and rings. He looked pretty cool and unique in his sunglasses.

What is a synthesizer?

A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals.

Early Life

Born to a Bengali Brahmin family, his parents were classical singers. Bappi Lahiri did not have any siblings. He was the only child of his parents. What’s really interesting is that Kishore Kumar is his maternal uncle.

Bappi Lahiri was trained by his parents from an early age of 3.

Music and Passion

Bappi Lahiri’s journey as a musician for Bollywood movies began at the age of 19. His first opportunity was for a movie titled “Daadu” in 1974. Thereafter, he continued to make melodious music for almost five decades. His songs were picturised on several popular heroes and heroines. In addition, he was the first Indian musician to popularise disco beats.

Bappi Lahiri has received several awards and recognition for his contribution to music.

In the end

Bappi Lahiri breathed his last breath in a hospital in Mumbai. His lungs were infected by obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea blocks one’s airways in the lungs while breathing. Basically, this leads to short breaths and sometimes one could stop breathing altogether.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family, and we hope they get the strength to move forward, with hope and courage, in these challenging times.
