Bharat Ratna for Pranab Mukherjee, Nanaji Deshmukh, Bhupen HazarikaOn 8th August, former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, late Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and late singer Bhupen Hazarika received the Bharat Ratna award. The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award.

President Ram Nath Kovind presented the award to Mr Mukherjee in a short ceremony conducted at the Durbar Hall in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
 	Mr Hazarika’s son Tej and a close relative of Mr Deshmukh, Virenderjeet Singh were also present to receive the awards for Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh, respectively.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi attended the ceremony. Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and several Union ministers were also present.

Apart from them, Mr Mukherjee’s children also attended the ceremony.

Initially, Mr Hazarika's son Tej did not want to accept the award in protest against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Act. However, he changed his position and has accepted it.
