Bhilar is India’s first ‘village of books’

Bhilar is India’s first ‘village of books’Bhilar village in Maharashtra used to be famous for growing the best strawberries in India.

Now, it’s known as a ‘village of books’ with 25 villagers having allocated a part of their homes for open libraries.

This is a part of the Pustakanch Gaav scheme of the Maharashtra government, launched in 2017.
 	This idea was inspired by the village of Hay-on-Wye in Wales, which is informally often called the ‘city of books’.

Maharashtra's Marathi language division put together a set of over 30,000 books of different categories.

These books were then distributed among the many houses, in addition to public locations like temples and colleges.
 	Each house is allotted books pertaining to at least one style and the house is marked with road indicators and wall art.
 	The whole village supports this initiative. They believe that these libraries are good for their children.

The success of the scheme could be seen by the thousands of guests who visit all year long.

Bhushan Gagrani, Principal Secretary (Marathi language division), credited the villagers and their enthusiasm for its success.

Visitors continue to be delighted by how the villagers have opened up their homes to strangers and look forward to coming back.
