Boy makes ear guards for hospital staff wearing masksDue to the COVID-19 disease, hospital workers around the world are working harder than ever. At the hospital, they wear face masks almost 24 hours a day to protect themselves and patients which can be very painful on the ears.

Seeing this, Quinn Callander, a 12-year-old boy from Vancouver, Canada has developed a simple but clever solution - he has designed an 'ear guard' which can be 3D printed by anyone.

How does Quinn's invention work?

Generally, face masks have straps that hook over the ears.
 	Instead of doing that, Quinn's 3D printed ear guard is a strap that goes around the back of the head to which one could attach the elastic of the mask.
 	This 'ear guard' has several grooves (space) on which the elastic strap of a mask can be attached. This allows the user to adjust the tightness.
 	Quinn has made the design open online on the website Thingiverse so that anyone can print it out if they have a 3D printer.

Since March, Quinn has made about 1700 such ear guards. Quinn is also a part of the Canadian Scouts* whose motto is “Do your best”. He is clearly following it well!

*Canadian Scouts is an organisation for young boys and girls which aims to help them become good world citizens, develop manners and skills in various outdoor activities.
