What is conjunction in astronomy?
When a planet is close to a moon, star, or another planet, this is called a conjunction in astronomy.
Two of the brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, will be in conjunction with each other today, March 1, causing a stunning planetary phenomenon to take place.
Important Details
- Firstly, both planets will be in perfect alignment with the moon at the same time.
- Secondly, they will approach each other at incredible distances.
- Above all, they will create the illusion that they are one and the same thing.
- If the sky is clear, people will be able to see this rare planetary phenomenon.
- The planetary conjunction occurs once every 13 months.
- This night-sky dance will reach its conclusion on 1 and 2 Mar soon after sunset.
- This is when the two planets will appear in the sky as though they are almost touching each other.
- Thereby resulting in a magnificently dazzling Jupiter-Venus conjunction.
- According to astronomers, this phenomenon is also known as the “spring star.”
- It derives its name from the fact that 1 March marks the beginning of meteorological spring.
- It is the time of year when temperatures begin to climb and signal the approach of the warmer summer months.
- To clarify, this is not the same as the astronomical spring, which begins on 17 March.
- Moreover, it is determined by the relative positions of the Earth and the sun rather than by the general climate of the region.
- It is claimed that this conjunction of Jupiter and Venus can be seen with the naked eye from practically any location on Earth, provided that the weather is clean and stable.
- What makes this conjunction even more interesting is the fact that:
- Venus and Jupiter are, respectively, the third and fourth brightest objects in the sky.
- Therefore the conjunction of these two celestial bodies makes for an amazing sight to see.
- Experts, also express that this year during the festival of colours “Holi”, there could be a rare ‘Supermoon’!
- A rare sight when the moon is coincident with the point in its orbit around the Earth.
- It is stated that during a supermoon, the moon seems much brighter and much closer to the earth.
